How to Stick with Your New Year’s Gym Resolution

The holidays are coming, and with the season come a lot of photo opportunities. So, what’s the best way to get in shape fast, especially in Phoenix, AZ? Maybe you’re the type of person who wistfully says, “I wish I could stick to my New Year’s gym resolution,” but time and a lack of motivation get in the way. That’s okay—we have all had those moments. In fact, 73 percent of people who make a New Year’s fitness goal let it fall by the wayside.

That doesn’t have to be the case for you. When you set a goal for physical fitness (not just weight loss), you are taking an important first step. Here are a few of the techniques we love to make sure that we not only stick to our resolutions, but treat ourselves kindly in the process:

  • Take it one step at a time: You need small, specific goals that you can meet without a huge disruption to your lifestyle. If you’ve never been to the gym before, set a goal for once a week. (We bet you’ll end up loving it and wanting to go more often, but starting the habit is the most important part.) If you start out thinking you’ll go to the gym six days a week, unless you already go for five, you’re likely setting yourself up for failure.
  • Show yourself the money: If you need help with a weight loss goal, pony up a small but significant amount and bet on yourself. If you lose, it will hurt a little. If you win, you keep that money and get to bask in the glory besides. There are apps for this, or you can donate it to a favorite charity—whatever motivates you.
  • Phone a friend: There’s nothing like an accountability partner to help you see your goals through. For many of us, it’s easy to say “not today” to ourselves, but much harder to let a friend or family member down. Embrace that about yourself and make a fitness pact with a loved one.
  • Variety is the spice of life: Some folks find working out boring, but it doesn’t have to be. One of the best ways to keep up with your fitness is to vary your workouts. You might find that you gravitate toward one type over others, but keeping it interesting is key when you need to keep yourself
